| Title: | Cabrillo Village Project |
| Short Title: | Cabrillo Village |
| Overview: | Farm workers, led by Caesar Chavez, in the face of eviction from grower-owned substandard housing, organized and found a way to buy Cabrillo Village in Ventura County, California. As a limited equity cooperative, they improved the village, making it into a place they could afford and where they were proud to live. The new owners were able to renovate existing housing stock and to build two phases of new housing and community facilities.Keeping cost-effective priorities in focus, aesthetic, cultural, and family concerns were key objectives in the planning and design process, while still being attentive to the concerns of effectively melding existing (rehabilitated) housing styles with new construction. Everything from active/passive solar design, color shadings, stucco materials, a stepped row house configuration, sports and community buildings resulted in positive national media recognition. |
