| Overview: | The Brooklyn/Queens Greenway (BQG) is a planned 40-mile long, 5,000 acre bicycle trail and pedestrian path stretching from Coney Island on the Atlantic Ocean to Fort Trotter on Long Island Sound. Serving as a greenway connecting element, the BQG links a diverse array of cultural/recreational entities (such as: 13 parks; several lakes, botanic gardens, and museums; New York Aquarium, Shea Stadium, National Tennis Center, and the site of the 1939 and 1964 World's Fair). Owing its linear park historical antecedents to the earlier open space planning visions of Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux in the late 19th century (in Brooklyn), the BQG takes planning direction from a participatory nexus of advocacy groups (primarily the Neighborhood Open Space Coalition), landscape designers, city planners, state agencies, and community residents |
