| Short Title: | Harlem Meer, Charles A. Dana Discovery |
| Overview: | In July 1985 the Central Park Conservancy, in cooperation with the City of New York Department of Parks & Recreation, began the planning and design of the Harlem Meer, an 11 acre body of water and surrounding landscape, after years of neglect had allowed this lake in Harlem's corner of Central Park to become polluted and dangerous. This partnership between the city and the Conservancy brought back the park, cleaned up the lake, restored the historic boathouse and playground, and returned a beautiful and important amenity to the citizens of Harlem and New York. The project restored a seriously degraded natural habitat in a section of Manhattan where citizens are deprived of nature. This restoration not only created a healthier ecosystem, but it used the highest standards of design in recreating an internationally renowned historical landscape and also stimulated needed neighborhood renewal, demonstrating how well-maintained open space can be an important component in reviving inner-city areas. |
