| Overview: | Since its opening in 1998, the Portland Public Market has served to revitalize the downtown urban economy of Portland. By offering space for permanent vendors and daystalls for small food producers, the Market provides a central space for small food and agricultural businesses and local growers to operate and flourish. It has also revitalized social, economic, and tourist activity in the area. The space, originally a gift from philanthropist Elizabeth Noyce, is also architecturally distinct amidst the architecture of Portland due to its reliance upon local timber and glass utilized in an effort to highlight the environmental heritage of Maine and its woodlands. |
