| Short Title: | Camino Nuevo |
| Overview: | Camino Nuevo is a new elementary school located in a formerly vacant mini-mall in inner-city Los Angeles. Built by a community development corporation working with the Los Angeles Unified School District to create a new model for a community-based school, Camino Nuevo exemplifies reuse of a commonplace urban resource, and a new model of public-private partnership. This project was recognized for its grass roots beginnings; its ambitious and complex agenda including education, job training, and other social services; and its outstanding architectural excellence. The Committee also noted the enormous potential of a school to provide opportunity and change lives, as well as the importance of neighborhood residents "owning" the impetus for change in their community. |
