| Title: | Portland Streetcar Project; |
| Short Title: | Portland Streetcar Project |
| Overview: | Originally started by the City of Portland to connect abandoned rail yards and a brownfield site to acres of vacant industrial land at the opposite end of downtown Portland, the Portland Streetcar project connects a hospital, the cultural district, the retail core, and the regional transit system, and also links five districts on Portland's west side. In addition to reclaiming the 70 acre brownfield site, this project has provided the impetus for raising $1.4 billion of private and institutional investment, encompassing both residential and non-residential uses. It has also contributed to the continuing development of a high quality, livable urban environment in Portland by serving high density areas, reducing auto trips, and delivering safe, clean, cost-effective transit services. The Selection Committee cited this Project as a model of public/private partnership, where common purpose became the basis of bold action. They commented on the effectiveness of using transportation as a mode of reclaiming disconnected parts of the city, and providing incentive for new development. The Committee also noted the environmentally friendly aspects of the system-ease of construction; quiet and clean cars; and accessibility to everyone in the community. Committee members considered this project a model for cities across the country. |
