| Overview: | Fruitvale Village is a 257,000 square foot "transit village" built by the non-profit Unity Council. Located on former BART parking lots, this Village is a mixed use development that has includes a pedestrian street and public plaza; 47 units of mixed income housing; a health clinic; a public library; a senior center; office space; and 38,000 of neighborhood retail shops and restaurants. Fruitvale aims to strengthen community institutions and catalyze neighborhood revitalization - physically, economically, and socially. The Selection Committee commended the project for its responsiveness to community needs and its transit-oriented development. They cited Fruitvale as a bold vision that sets a new standard for community development-based projects. They commended the inclusive process conducted by the Unity Council and the importance of creating a new public outdoor space that celebrates ethnic and community identity. |
