| Overview: | The Bruner Selection Committee considered Millennium Park a powerful example of what can be accomplished when effective leadership and a strong public/private partnership come together to realize a compelling vision for a city. Mayor Daley’s vision of what could be the willingness and generosity of Chicagoans to support that vision, and the skilled leadership required to make it a reality, provide a very significant model for transformative placemaking in critical urban spaces around the country. The Millennium Park project transformed an unsightly combination of commuter railroad tracks, surface parking, and degraded parkland into a vibrant public square as well as a distinguished cultural venue for art, music, performance, and recreation. The effort has also laid the groundwork for future residential and commercial development in the area. created in an underutilized space in the heart of downtown Chicago, The Committee was also impressed by the sophistication of the design of Millennium Park and its components. The committee acknowledged that Millennium Park impacts thousands of people from far and wide, both residents and tourists, who come to see the Park. They also commended the fact that the Park is used by a diverse group of people, and offers recreational opportunity for people from all walks of life. |
