Pulp Fiction Cover Art

The George Kelley Paperback and Pulp Fiction Collection

Special Collections, University Libraries
State University of New York at Buffalo

Pulp fiction cover art, primarily from the 1940s and 1950s, is provided in this initial collection which focuses on crime fiction from the George Kelley Paperback and Pulp Fiction Collection. The covers of approximately 250 pulp fiction novels are represented, with images of the front and back covers, as well as the spines. This cover art is graphically intense and communicates the social and cultural trends of the times. Pulp fiction was a dominant mode of mass media throughout the mid-twentieth century, and its format and the graphic design of its cover art continue to influence cultural objects and media today. The George Kelley Paperback and Pulp Fiction Collection, held by the University at Buffalo Libraries, is one of the largest (over 30,000 volumes) and well preserved collections of pulp fiction in the world.

The cover art is searchable by authors, titles, artists, publishers, content, dominant colors, and more. Content analysis is expansive, facilitating searching on character types, clothing, objects, weapons, scenery, etc. appearing on the covers.

Most of the cover art in this collection corresponds to texts analysed in the UB Libraries' Gumshoes, Sleuths & Snoopers database at http://libweb.lib.buffalo.edu/kelley/KelleyAdvanced.asp.
